Kinship as Social Infrastructure: Address Terms and Cultural Relationality in Tetun Dili

Abstract
This article examines Tetun Dili address terms and kinship expressions as a cultural system of relational identity rather than as a simple vocabulary list. Based on a 37-entry documentary micro-corpus containing family terms, honorifics, professional titles, clan terms, ritual categories, and customary-governance expressions, the study combines data auditing, functional-domain coding, lexical-origin profiling, formality-gradient analysis, and cultural-pragmatic interpretation. The findings show that household and intimate kinship forms constitute the largest domain (29.7%), followed by clan, ritual, and ancestral authority (24.3%), honorific and professional address (21.6%), extended and affinal kinship (13.5%), community governance and customary law (8.1%), and symbolic social intimacy (2.7%). Indigenous Tetun forms dominate the corpus (56.8%), but Portuguese-derived and mixed forms reveal the continuing effects of colonial, religious, educational, and administrative contact. The study argues that Tetun Dili address practices function as social infrastructure: they organize intimacy, hierarchy, ritual authority, intergenerational belonging, and public respect in a multilingual postcolonial ecology. The article contributes a data-driven model for studying low-resource languages through relational lexicon, cultural pragmatics, and community-based linguistic documentation.
